OPENING WEEK IN REVIEW

RECAP OF THE WEEKEND – OPENING WEEK!!!!!!

WELL, WELL, WELL, FOOTBALL IS FUCKING BACK, AND PRAISE JESUS IT IS. AT LEAST FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE I DON’T NEED TO HEAR HOW MARCO IS CONTEMPLATING GIVING UP GAMBLING BECAUSE @VEGASBLAKE ISN'T SPOON-FEEDING HIM WINNERS...

The Week In Review:
I think the biggest takeaway from last weekend is one single thing: How do coaches making millions of fucking dollars continue to try and outsmart a very simple sport? Kicking a FG on 3rd? Surprise onsides when you are controlling the game? Icing your own kicker? I mean, Scott Frost has to be literally trying so hard to win that he convinced himself that and onsides kick was the only play to make there. That’s crazy. As I peruse twitter on the daily, I see coaches that think they have the tiger by the tail by being so smart. Hey how about Brian Kelly refusing to name a starter for the FSU v. LSU game. Unless the difference between the QB’s is one is Pat Mahomes and the other is Tommy Frazier, I see no reason to not name a starter, it is not giving you any advantage. Sark won’t release a depth chart to the media, WTF is that proving. Harbaugh is using the term biblical as to why he isn’t naming a starter. These are a bunch of over payed control freaks, these dip fucks act like meth addicts. Always looking under for the rock trying to find the spy….Come on man, coach a fucking football game. But I digress lets take a peak back at the tech game, et al.

Texas Tech 63 – Murrey State 10.
Id say my excitement level riveled somewhere between the my first buzz and my first game of just the tip prior to kick off. The new era of Tech football is something I really don’t think I have ever seen for tech athletics, before, in all my days. I mean a near sell out for Murray State, coming out of nearly 10 years of being mentioned in the same breath as Kansas, so it felt great to see the ball fly at the jones, the tortillas in mass being thrown, and McGuire prowling the sidelines. Something felt right, like the biggest sigh ever, or ya know after it been ““a while””. All in all it was a near perfect opener for all involved, but this reporter doesn’t just say good game, slap an ass and move on, nope, you came hear for hard hitting analysis, questionable sexual humor, and Texas hate, so here we go…

The 10 things that made it move:
1. Vertical passing routes. 2009 was the last time we saw verts ran to run out the secondary for crosses underneath. Not since 2009 have we seen the willingness to throw to those vertical routes to open up the underneath. So that, above all was the best thing I saw.
2. QBs all looked really good (Mort running with mostly 3’s certainly hamstrung him). Shough was decisive, Smith had major zip, and they both didn’t really put the ball in harm’s way. All you can ask for against FBS teams, but prior Tech squads take Murray to the 4th with all starters still playing heavy mins.
3. The crowd was GREAT. Full, loud, tortillas laced. Was nice to see the give a shit is back in the south plains.
4. Didn’t need them much, but we have a very solid RB combination. Got yards when they got the ball, for sure played a roll in picking up the blitz. Taj is the best of the 2, he has break away speed, but I think we will miss Sadarick when he graduates. Remember he sat behind Henry for KK and Wells.
5. Again – I know it was Murray state – but the wide receivers looked the part, big, physical, went to get the ball, and made the QB’s look better (see below in the Erectile disfunction 10, as to why they were good here). Step up in comp this week, but was a nice surprise.
6. DL was the strength of the D this weekend. You did not get a ton from Tyree, and still they dominated, as they should have, against MS. They rolled bodies in and out, looked like a P5 DL, for once.
7. McNamara is an absolute wagon as a punter. He will help decide a game down the road, either by flipping the field or pinning them deep, I will also throw in here that no missed FG’s, so there is that.
8. I love that Kittley was on the sideline. Cumbie and Dummy were in the booth, I just like he went directly to the QB’s after each drive. Seems like especially with someone like Smith, it will be a bigger deal to be face to face to work through drive recaps.
9. We played EVERYONE. Even Houcut’s kid got a lot of play. This has to make the staff crazy happy, doubtful we play that many again all season, the schedule is now 11 games of hell.
10. We won an opener, at home, at night, against an inferior opponent. We trucked them, which we should have, the game was over at the flea flicker. They went for kill shots all night, it showed, and it worked.
11. BONUS – NO DUMB DUMB STUPID ASS PENALTIES.

The 10 things that gave me ED:
1. Lets start with the obvious, Shough going out is pretty significant. Not a season ender by any stretch, but I think you want him against NC State and Texas. I don’t think he is better than Smith, but he is probably much more cerebral in his decisions and thinking plays ahead, which just comes with playing in big games. Which he did at Oregon. But I doubt you see him till late season if at all.
2. Ok, if we are talking QBs, they underthrew just about every deep ball. If they hit 5 or 6 of those deep passes in stride, the game is probably over sooner, but as I mentioned above, had a shit ton of WR’s bail outs.
3. Our DB’s were the worst unit on the field all day, and it was ALL game. Murray State is a big run 1st team, so maybe we sold out to the run and left them on an island, but that shit was bad and its on film. Be ready for Dana to bomb away repeatedly. These guys need to make the biggest improvement from week 1 to 2. Hopefully Frye is back, he is a key piece. Yates needs these guys to play like they are the best unit on the team.
4. The OL did its job, but it certainly wasn’t dominating at all. Its piece work, and Hamby will get them more cohesive, but damn they just didn’t pop for me. Especially the 2’s and 3’s.
5. Morton is young, and looked very, very young. He played with 3’s, so some slack there, but he was up against MS 2’s and 3’s and looked like poop for the most part. He is 1 snap away from stating against Texas so hope he grows up in a bis ass hurry.
6. After Saturday’s game, we will likely only be favored against Houston and Kansas, maybe WVU, but that’s about it. Super tough for the next 11 games.
7. That broadcast was garbage, every single thing about it. I mean they gave McGuire and Smith headsets for interviews. Shit all the way around.
8. Didn’t hear many LB’s names called. Maybe that’s because the DL was so solid, but quite night from the group.
9. FBS team, looked like an FBS team for sure. Its good to line up and hit another team, but not sure HOW much we really learned.
10. Dana is coming to town, I know this isn’t a look back, but we didn’t really do 10 shitty things. Dana is coming in, so let the mind games begin. He lets his players off the leash 24/7. They got into the UTSA students’ section on Saturday. With WVU they had a sledgehammer during warm ups hitting the double T. Last year they Coogs ran through our warmups and shit talked the whole way. No team in America mirrors their coach like Houston. So, they roll in with all the swagger of a big time program, and Dana know LBK, so no doubt we are getting the best punch they have. They will travel and let us know all about it till the end. To say this is a weird must win, is probably pre-mature, but damn boy, you are at NC State, Okie State and KState and home for Texas prior to the bye week, all with Smith at the helm. You kinda have to win the ones you are supposed to, and this is the easiest game of the next 5, I said 3-3 was almost winning, but after watching our opponents, maybe 4-2 is winning. Fuck me if I know.

So you killed a bad team, its what you should do. So my one phrase recap of all the teams on the schedule.

Houston – Lucky to beat lower level team.
NC State – ECU kicker was MVP
Texas – who the fuck cares
Kstate – Didn’t watch.
Okie State – Knowles gone is already noticeable?
WVU – Got out coached.
Baylor – Same as Tech
TCU – I think less of them than I originally did.
Kansas – I kinda liked the unis
ISU – Didn’t know they played
OU – its UTEP.

I will TRY to get out a gambling preview by Friday. I love College football, like it’s unhealthy. I like GT with the points tonight, Clemson lost both coordinators, and they were garbage last year. ACC has been wildly unimpressive thus far, save FSU.
